Srđan Tošić is Full Professor at the Faculty of Music, University of Arts in Belgrade. He is one of the most prominent Serbian guitarists and professors of classical guitar. He began his artistic career nearly 40 years ago, after being awarded second Prize in Yugoslav Competition of Music Artists (Zagreb, 1985.). Shortly after came the Third prize in International Jeunesses Musicalles Competition (Belgrade, 1985.), which made him known to both audience and music critics in former Yugoslavia. After completing his music studies at Zagreb Academy of Music, in 1986., where he studied with Ante Čagalj and Darko Petrinjak, he moved back to his native hometown of Belgrade and started continual concert career which resulted in numerous solo recitals, as well as a lot of chamber engagements and performances with orchestras.
In 1989 he won a prestigious ANDRES SEGOVIA Prize, awarded to the best participant in course of Spanish music, at Festival “Musica en Compostela” Santiago de Compostela, Spain. An abundant number of compositions in his repertoire cover a wide range of music styles and epochs, spreading from Renaissance to contemporary music. The concert named “XX Century”, held in February 1996., presented mayor works for guitar from 20th century music (works by Villa-Lobos, Britten, Walton, Dyens and D. Bogdanovic) and was acclaimed as one of that year Belgrade’s concert season peaks. He performed abroad, in Moscow (USSR, 1989), Bulgaria, Greece, Slovenia and USA (Bloomington, Franklin, Indianapolis).
He cooperated with singers, flutists and in various guitar duos; performed concertos by Vivaldi, Giuliani, and Rodrigo together with Zagreb Symphonists, Belgrade Philharmonic and Belgrade Symphony Orchestra, orchestras in cities of Niš, Podgorica, Skoplje and Banja Luka. Srdjan Tošić participated in several guitar festivals in Serbia and abroad (Guitar art Festival in Belgrade being most known among them), but was also regular guest in the most important music festivals in Serbia like BEMUS, BELEF, Mokranjac Days, Novi Sad Summer etc. Srdjan Tosic teaches at Belgrade Faculty of Music and has taught at University of Arts in Banja Luka, University of Niš and University of Arts in Novi Sad. Some of his former students have already gained international recognition over competitions, concert performances and recordings, thus helping so-called ‘’Belgrade school of guitar’’ to be established.
